Nathan James Dearden is a Welsh composer whose music is shaped by its function: written for particular people, places, and purposes. Working across concert music, choral composition, and immersive multimedia performance, his work is characterised by clarity of gesture and directness of expression, creating music shaped by the communities and contexts for which it is written.
Nathan's music has been commissioned, performed, broadcast, and recorded by leading performers and organisations including the the BBC Singers, Philharmonia Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, and the National Youth Choir of Wales. His work has featured at festivals including the ISCM World Music Days, Cheltenham Music Festival, and the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, and has been released by NMC Recordings, Delphian, and Signum Records.
Alongside his work as a composer, Nathan is a conductor, educator, mentor, and artistic leader. He is Associate Professor in Music Composition at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he is also Composer-in-Residence with the Choir of Royal Holloway.
